Cate Buchanan is a Senior Mediation Adviser on the UN Standby Team of Experts, Mediation Support Unit, Department of Political Affairs. Cate has two ‘hats’: Process design; Gender & Inclusion. Prior to joining the Standby Team in January 2018, she worked for several years on the Myanmar ceasefire and political dialogue process as an adviser with the Nyein Foundation and armed groups. Previously Cate worked for the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue as the Arms and Human Security Programme Manager (2000-2008) and Senior Adviser in Asia (2009-2013). In 2013, along with Antonia Potter, she established the feminist advisory service Athena Consortium. Cate has worked extensively on addressing gun violence including global standards and gun law reform in countries recovering from war. In recent years she led the Surviving Gun Violence Project. Cate is a Gender Equality Specialist in the civilian experts pool of the Australian Government (‘Australia Assists’) and holds degrees from the Australian National University and Sydney University.
