In this article Jonathan Cohen of Conciliation Resources analyses the changing political climate in Georgia following the sudden removal of long-serving president Eduard Shevardnadze in the run up to the elections.  The article then outlines the main challenges facing the protagonists of the so-called 'Rose Revolution' and any new Georgian regime.  In order to achieve a sound democracy in Georgia, its leaders need to address the fragmentation of Georgian territory, wide corruption in the country and also the influential roles played by other countries, such as Russia.
