Position Title: Consultant - Desk Research on Pacific Climate Change and Conflict

We are currently seeking an experienced consultant to undertake desk research on climate change and environmental peacebuilding relevant to the Pacific region. The Consultant will support Conciliation Resources’ Pacific programme by undertaken desk research to 1) review relevant academic literature on climate change, environmental peacebuilding relevant to the Pacific region 2) conduct a mapping exercise of relevant actors working on climate change in the Pacific; 3) survey international environmental peacebuilding practice, including climate risk analysis tools; 4) produce a list of recommendations for policy and practice, including a list of relevant ‘people-centred’ terminology.
The consultant will produce a 10-15 page report and also conduct a presentation to Conciliation Resources staff. This report will help to inform CR’s overall approach and the inform the design of the Monitoring, Learning and Evaluation framework.
Conciliation Resources has worked in the Pacific region since 1994. Currently there are three components to the Pacific Programme: 1) A small governance-related programme in Fiji; 2) a regional program which works with peacebuilding partners across the region to share different practices and approaches; 3) A significant programme of work in Bougainville and emerging work in the highlands region of Papua New Guinea.
Our project seeks to build peaceful communities so that they are able to prevent, mitigate and resolve conflicts arising from climate and environmental change and other interconnected conflict drivers, particularly, in those communities facing relocation.
The project will work in four areas: 1) to conduct research which engages with community perspectives on environment, settlement, change and relocation; 2) the development of conflict analysis and peacebuilding resources to assist communities to prepare for their own futures; 3) work with communities to support conflict sensitive climate change adaptation including relocation; 4) inform national and international thinking through sharing project process and outcome learning in relevant policy debates.
Person Specification
Desirable experience and skills (three or more of the following):
- Experience of research and working in the Pacific region
- Practice or academic experience in peacebuilding
- Experience in conducting literature reviews
- Report writing skills to a high standard
- Sound writing, proofreading and copy-editing skills
