Response to the AU-UN draft regional strategy to address the threat posed by the activities of the LRA

Conciliation Resources and the Regional Civil Society Task Force, composed of civil society organisations, religious and traditional leaders from areas affected by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), welcome the development of a regional strategy to address the threat posed by the LRA. We urge that it must involve more than just a military approach.

In this joint press release, Conciliation Resources, Oxfam, Cafod and Christian Aid, along with 10 local organisations, stress that renewed military action against the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) risks triggering further devastation for local people in DR of Congo, Central African Republic, and South Sudan unless more is done to protect civilians and prevent retaliations by one of Africa’s most brutal rebel groups.

Established in 1995, Conciliation Resources is now a medium sized NGO, with a budget approaching £5 million and a talented team of over thirty people. Our ambitions have grown, but our aims to work through close relationships of trust with local partners remain. We have chosen to write a strategic ‘framework’ for 2012 to 2014 rather than a ‘plan’ as we hope this will help to clarify our areas of core competence and more tightly define the parameters of our work, articulating a single overarching ambition.
