The conflict in Colombia,  is waged at the level of communities; in response many communities have taken their future into their own hands. Through a variety of initiatives they have offered their own vision of peace based on new social relations founded on solidarity, cooperation and reciprocity. However, these invaluable local initiatives take tremendous courage and often come at a heavy price. Drawing on three examples, Esperanza Hernández Delgado offers a typology of initiatives and their different emphases. She concludes that peace in Colombia will require not only peace accords but also social inclusion and participation at community level.
