Judith Verweijen

Judith Verweijen is a Lecturer in International Security at the University of Sussex and Director of the Sussex Centre for Conflict and Security Research. In 2015 and 2016, she was Lead Researcher of the Rift Valley Institute’s Usalama project, which focused on armed groups and local governance. Judith’s research examines the interplay between violence, conflict and armed mobilisation; the inner workings of state and non-state armed forces; the militarisation of conflicts around natural resources; and violence against civilians. She focuses on eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where she has conducted extensive field research since 2010.
