A group of young Georgian and Abkhaz 'future leaders' visited Brussels, Belgium as part of the project ‘Understanding the past and facing the future’, organised by Conciliation Resources in cooperation with Saferworld.

This report by Conciliation Resources recounts what happened when the participants met representatives of European institutions, NATO and independent experts to discuss issues important to them.

The visit was also a rare opportunity for youth from both sides of the conflict to meet one another and take part in facilitated discussions about their region and exchange views.

The project's aim was to challenge the young peoples' perceptions about 'the West' and open channels of communication with each other.  For some, the experience was an emotional roller coaster, especially when discussing sensitive issues with their peers.
