In the aftermath of the disappointing June 2011 Armenian—Azeri summit in Kazan, this article by Laurence Broers of Conciliation Resources analyses what went wrong and what can be learned for next time.

Even though domestic contexts seemed favourable before the summit, the article comments on Armenia's preoccupation with internal politics, Karabakh's doubts regarding the Madrid principles and Azerbaijan's uncertainty over whether to choose diplomacy or the battlefield.

Lessons to learn include re-evaluating Russia's role in the process and addressing the problem of both societies being essentially isolated from one another.
