In this presentation by Clem McCartney at the Public Seminar on Engagement of Armed Groups in Peace Processes at the University of the Philippines, he examines the experiences of civil society in their engagement with armed groups. In particular he looks at the lessons learned by Terry Waite, the former Advisor on International Affairs to the Archbishop of Canterbury. While negotiating the release of hostages in the middle east in the 1980's, Waite was taken hostage himself and held until 1991. Waite drew a number of conclusions on the issue of civil society's engagement with armed groups, based on his own experiences.
