This article by Conciliation Resources, written with the support of other organisations, analyses what is required for effective demobilisation, disarmament and rehabilitation (DDR) in Sierra Leone.

Drawing on experiences in Liberia, it explores who might act as official observers of a DDR process.  Lessons to be learned from past failures include ensuring commitment to implementation of any such process and accessing funding quickly.  The article then touches on the complex political landscape in the country.

Specific challenges to address are security risks at assembly points for weapon collection and victimisation during resettlement.  There is also a probability that hidden arms will exist in the bush.
