West Africa peace, security and development update
Conciliation Resources produces these newsletters with local partners to analyse and promote debate on relevant issues in Sierra Leone and the Mano River sub-region. The latest issue, published September 2008 focuses on:
Strengthening Citizens' Security
This update gives an overview of some of the successes, challenges and lessons from our recently completed pilot project on Strengthening Citizens' Security. It shows how the four partners have been able to engage high-level security sector leaders and decision makers, including Sierra Leonean parliamentarians, and help them see the value of strengthening ordinary citizens' participation in securing peace and development.

Youth and security
Dealing with the needs of a large number of economically
and politically marginalized youths is essential to ensure Sierra Leone
remains at peace.

over but what caused the war still remains, which
makes peace shaky,” explains one young woman.

Women and security
Women play a crucial role in maintaining peace and democracy but despite
making up over 50 per cent of the population they have been poorly
represented in governance before,
during and after Sierra Leone's decade-long war. This trend needs
to be reversed.
This edition
focuses on the role of women within Sierra Leone’s
security sector.
Most articles are by female security
sector practitioners and civil society activists.
