Working with the Citizens’ Constitutional Forum (CCF)
Women at a CCF grassroots education workshop in Naloto Village, Tailevu
The CCF is a small multicultural and not-for-profit organization. Based in Fiji’s capital city Suva, it is governed by a voluntary board of directors through its executive director Reverend Akuila Yabaki. Their work is mainly funded by international donor agencies.
CCF focus on defending Fiji’s Constitution and laws through advocacy, public education and facilitated learning and dialogue.
Their approach is ambitious yet systematic. They work with rural communities, young people, unions, religious institutions and South Pacific regional networks and international institutions on four strategic themes:
- indigenous and minority rights
- democracy and the rule of law
- housing and social exclusion
- land and resource rights
CCF has a high profile in Fiji’s media and in urban and rural areas. They have successfully used the courts to challenge the government in defence of the Constitution, most notably in a landmark case after the 2000 coup. They have also kept Fijian democracy issues alive on regional and inter-governmental agendas.
They produce various resources, such as a popular guide to raise awareness of the Constitution’s provisions.
