Launch events in Sudan
Juba, 2 March 2007
A roundtable meeting was held to discuss some of the lessons from the Accord 18 publication, Peace by piece: addressing Sudan’s conflicts, focusing in particular on the challenges facing the south.
Editors of the publication from CR and Concordis International heard concerns from participants about the lack of political will over implementing some elements of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). Particular disquiet was voiced about the agreement on the area of Abyei where the parties appear not to be taking responsibility for what has been agreed in the CPA.
Participants suggested that expectations of a peace dividend have not yet been fulfilled and that there is much work to do to complete the peace process, especially building new governance institutions and holding elections.
Khartoum, 4 March 2007
The Swiss Ambassador Andrea Reichlin hosted a reception to present the publication, attended by CR and Concordis International and guests from political, diplomatic and civil society in Sudan.
Speakers included:
Anne Itto, who was a member of the SPLM delegation at the Naivasha talks and is now a Minister in the Government of National Unity. She spoke about women’s roles in peace processes.
Ambasador Omer el-Sheikh, Coordinator of the Joint National Transition Team and member of the National Congress Party, addressed issues relating to the Joint Assessment Mission.
Hassan Abdel Ati, Coordinator of the National Civic Forum, reflected on the role civil society played in the peace agreements
Additional briefing meetings also took place during the trip.
