In February 2002 an international joint analysis workshop brought together people working in conflict transformation to exchange ideas and practical experiences of promoting mechanisms for the public to participate in peace processes.

Case studies from Colombia, Guatemala, Mali, Northern Ireland, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Somalia and South Africa gave participants an opportunity to learn from experiences elsewhere. A workshop report documented the experiences, issues and lessons discussed during the event and formed the basis for the publication Owning the process: public participation in peacemaking (Accord issue 13, 2002).

Other activities for this project in early 2003 included:

• a launch co-hosted by the Swiss Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Swiss Embassy in London

• a presentation to the Swiss Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and briefings to other Swiss agencies in Berne, Switzerland

• a seminar at the International Conflict Resolution Programme, Columbia University, New York

• a policy forum for United Nations officials in collaboration with the International Peace Academy, New York

Issue editor Catherine Barnes also gave presentations at George Mason University, the United States Institute of Peace and the World Bank, Washington, DC.

Since then, Conciliation Resources staff and Catherine Barnes have presented the publication’s findings in workshops, training seminars and public forums around the world, including in Colombia, Israel-Palestine, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
