Partners Compromising on autonomy: Mindanao in transition (Accord issue 6, 1999) was published in collaboration with the Centre for Peace Studies, Mindanao State University. The Centre carries out research projects that support the mandate of Mindanao State University, including the provision of equal educational opportunities, especially among the minority populations in Mindanao such as the Lumad and the Moro communities. It also publishes a bi-monthly university newsletter, a research journal and the university’s annual report. It partners with the United Nations Development Programme on a human resource development program for mainstreaming Moro National Liberation Front combatants as part of the Mindanao peace process. Centre for Peace Studies Contact: Dr. Rufa Cagoco-Guiam Peace Education Centre of Notre Dame University is the main centre for peace and development studies in Mindanao. The Centre provides training for peace education teachers and helps other educational institutions with curriculum development and peace-related research. It offers skills training in facilitation, dialogue, mediation and other non-violent, proactive and creative ways of resolving conflict and building peace. It serves as secretariat to bodies working directly with the peace process in the southern Philippines. A desk for Muslim-Christian dialogue is involved directly with inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue initiatives in Mindanao and the rest of the country. The centre establishes linkages with government and non-government agencies and other groups that serve communities in conflict through confidence-building projects and peace and development activities for the affected population. Events Following the delayed implementation of various provisions of the 1996 Peace Agreement, Accord revisited the Philippines-Mindanao project in 2003. Working with Rufa Cagoco-Guiam of the Mindanao State University (MSU) Centre for Peace Studies an updated version of the publication was produced along with a series of radio programmes. In September 2003, CR participated in the launch of the updated publication in Mindanao, as part of its contribution to a seminar held by MSU on ‘Learning from public participation in peacemaking’.
