Sanctions and the political process for Darfur: an interview with Jan Eliasson Alex de Waal (2008) In this interview, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Darfur Jan Eliasson discusses the pressure international actors have exerted on the Sudanese government and non-signatory armed groups in relation to efforts to resolve the Darfur conflict. He highlights the importance of rewarding cooperation, of making threats credible, and the usefulness of the stigmatizing effect of targeted sanctions. He concludes with some reflections on the May 2006 Darfur Peace Agreement, which was probably put into place with too much haste without being anchored in local support.
