The role of the international community in Colombia Augusto Ramírez Ocampo (2004) In a post-Cold War era with greater emphasis on security, human rights, sustainable development and combating the international drugs trade the international community’s attention has been drawn to the Colombian conflict. However, until the late 1990s Colombia was reluctant to accept the international community as an actor in finding a solution. This changed as the conflict increasingly threatened regional security and with the internationalization of peace under President Pastrana through the creation of the Group of Friends for Peace in Colombia and the appointment of a Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General. The article examines the different roles played by the international community and reviews contradictions within its approaches to the conflict, concluding that a successful peace process will need international support.
