Negotiations with the FARC: 1982-2002

Camilo González Posso (2004)

In the last 25 years three separate attempts at dialogue with the FARC, Colombia’s oldest and largest guerrilla group, have ended in failure. However, Camilo González Posso argues that only a negotiated settlement can bring peace and that the conditions for this can be created. The article analyses the different models and mechanisms of negotiations used, the decisions made, changing national and international circumstances, and the lessons to be learnt. The author concludes that a new model for negotiations and for a ceasefire is needed and that, amongst other things, the process must address the economic factors that fuel the conflict as well as the role of the international community, human rights and International Humanitarian Law.
