Alternatives for peace: the business community’s perspective Rodrigo Gutiérrez (2004) Because of its economic, social and cultural influence in society the business community is essential for resolving conflict and therefore, Rodrigo Gutiérrez argues, has an inescapable social responsibility to do so. As a member of the business community and president of the business foundation Ideas for Peace, he describes the role that business can play in supporting a political solution to the conflict. Crucial for peace, is his view, is the military superiority of the state, the guerrillas’ understanding that they no longer represent the majority of the population, a realistic concept of peace and a neutral mediator.
