Peace and reconciliation Carlinda Monteiro (2004) Angola’s long and bloody conflict has left a deep-rooted sense of distrust and fear that must be addressed if there is to be a just and lasting peace. However, the government’s military victory and subsequent emphasis on the need to forgive and forget has prevented a process through which to address the causes of the conflict. Carlinda Monteiro argues that a meaningful process of reconciliation must therefore be rooted in local social and cultural contexts. The article examines the mixture of religions and beliefs that is found in Angola and how this – in particular the African traditions of collective rituals and spirituality – can form the basis for addressing the issues of truth and reconciliation.
