Keeping the peace: security in Aceh

For three years after the 2005 peace agreement, security in Aceh has held remarkably well. But Jones identifies of a number of sinister patterns that have emerged that could destabilize the peace process. Despite effective demobilization, a dysfunctional reintegration process has meant high unemployment and resentment among former fighters of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). And in 2008, five former GAM members were killed in an incident in Central Aceh, which was ominously similar to an episode that wrecked the 2002 peace process. Also, campaigns to split Aceh into two new provinces appear to be gaining momentum, contrary to the terms of the peace agreement.
