The political process in Aceh: a new beginning?

Aguswandi describes the transition of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) from 'rebels to administrators'. This process began in earnest with the election to governor of Aceh of Irwandi Yusuf, previously a high-ranking GAM member. The election process encouraged the political reintegration of former GAM combatants into society. But broader political transition in Aceh has been difficult. Irwandi lacks experience of public office, while administrative structures are in need of reform. Some groups from the war in Aceh, such as the Pembela Tanah Air (PETA), are not engaged in the transition process, while there is pressure from some quarters to subdivide Aceh into smaller provinces.
