Human rights and justice in Aceh: the long and winding road
Faisal Hadi
For the people of Aceh, the years of conflict in the province are synonymous with appalling human rights violations. But Hadi contests that efforts to redress violations during the war have been hampered by political resistance at the national level, international indifference to the human rights agenda, and weak civil society leverage. Growing recognition of human rights in Indonesia from the late 1990s did not extend to Aceh. And although the 2005 peace settlement agreed to establish a Human Rights Court for Aceh, there has been backtracking over the Court's retrospective jurisdiction, to consider cases that occurred during the war.
