Economic injustice: cause and effect of the Aceh conflict

Decades of violence and the sudden devastation of the 2004 tsunami combined to create a particular set of circumstances in Aceh. And a correspondingly specialized solution is needed, which can address recovery both from the tsunami, and from the physical and psycho-social destruction of the conflict. Nazamuddin stresses the need to link sustainable peace to economic growth, aimed at normalizing the livelihoods of victims of both the conflict and the tsunami. But despite improvements in political stability, strategies for economic growth - which could increase employment and enhance productivity - are not coherent.
