Returning home: video on internally displaced people in
Uganda
Since 1997 over 1.7 million northern Ugandans have lived in
makeshift camps far from their homes because of war between
their government and the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army. This 20-minute video monitors the progress and challenges
facing them as many slowly move to transit camps or their
original villages amid uncertainty over the signing of a final
peace agreement. Produced by our partners
at the Social Communications Department, Gulu Archdiocese, it was recently
shown on Ugandan national television.
Strengthening citizens’ security in Sierra Leone
Our latest Peace,
security and development update focuses on
the role of women within Sierra Leone’s security sector, with
most articles written by female civil society activists and security
practitioners. It gives suggestions for improving their
involvement and an overview of the work being done as part of
our pilot project to make the region’s security sectors more
accessible and accountable to ordinary people. more...

Supporting northern Uganda’s faltering peace process
In June we hosted a visit by five community leaders from
northern Uganda to ask the UK and US governments to help avoid
war resuming at a critical point in a peace deal between the
Ugandan government and rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). They
also met with the Acholi diaspora and held reflection seminars
with the Northern Uganda
Advocacy Partnership for Peace. Read
more about our work in Uganda and Sudan and
the Reuters interview
with Acholi paramount chief Rwot David
Acana.
Policy seminars in London and New York
We held two policy seminars on the role of incentives,
sanctions and conditionality in peace processes. Speakers at
the London event included former UK Northern Ireland minister
Michael Ancram MP and Sudan expert Alex de Waal. The seminar in
New York was co-run with the United Nations Mediation Support
Unit for key staff in the Department of Political Affairs and
other UN mediation experts. Read

Conference on conflict and migration: Georgia-Abkhazia
At a time of high tension and limited dialogue in the region,
Georgian and Abkhaz conference participants discussed
sensitivities concerning repatriation and the return of
internally displaced people, and consulted experts about
international experiences of dealing with such issues. The
conference in Istanbul was co-hosted with partners the
Heinrich Boell Foundation and Center for Citizen Peacebuilding
(University of California). Read
more about our work on the Georgia-Abkhaz conflict.
