Working to reduce conflict around the 2007
elections in Sierra Leone
CR has been working with our partner organizations in Sierra Leone on a range of activities to reduce election-related conflict. Activities included roundtable discussions on 'Elections 2007 and the sustainability of peace and democracy in Sierra Leone' and 'Creating a conducive environment for a free, fair and transparent elections' and workshops on developing ways to avoid tensions within the community around elections. These events were attended by participants from the National Electoral Commission, government and the formal security sector, academics, traditional leaders and civil society representatives from trade unions and youth groups.
One of the initiatives that came out of this process was the Youth-to-Youth Campaign for Violence Free Elections which has enabled young people to learn more about the electoral process as well as campaign against election related violence.
Our Strengthening Citizens' Security project produced the first issue of a newsletter, 'Peace, Security and Development Update', which focuses on preparations for the 2007 elections. The newsletter analyses issues of security, peace, democracy and development in Sierra Leone and the Mano River sub-region in particular. more...

Films from the Caucasus at the ICA
In celebration of the groundbreaking project, Dialogue through Film, in which young film-makers from Azerbaijan and Nagorny Karabakh produced short documentaries about life on both sides of their unresolved conflict, the Institute of Contemporary Arts is screening six films on 27 September at 20.45.
The films reflect the traumas, fears, hopes and humour of people in their societies affected by the conflict. The results are moving, funny and thought-provoking. The films will be followed by a discussion with CR, its partners in the project (Internews Armenia, Internews Azerbaijan and the Stepanakert Press Club) and some of the film-makers.
Tickets for the event are available on the ICA website or through their box office on 020 7930 3647.
