Dialogue through film DVD
Making short films for a unique project on the conflict over Nagorny Karabakh has given young Karabakh Armenians and Azerbaijanis a rare chance to talk directly and get to know each other. A selection of their films is now available on DVD and will be shown throughout the South Caucasus in 2008. Charting the hopes, fears and humour of people living with the consequences of conflict, “these films show that we might have different aspirations but war is not the way to solve our conflict”. more...

New Accord issue and policy brief
Conciliation Resources' latest Accord publication and policy brief, published in March, explore how the use of incentives, sanctions and conditionality can underpin or undermine peacemaking. Drawing upon cases such as Darfur, Sri Lanka, northern Uganda, South Africa and Georgia-Abkhazia, it concludes that these tools are rarely effective unless they form part of a wider strategy that makes support for a durable peace process its priority. more...

Training course for UK government conflict advisers
CR Policy Adviser Catherine Barnes led a three-day residential training course in March on peace processes and conflict transformation, held at the request of the UK Department for International Development. Co-organized by CR and North South Consultants Exchange, the course indicates the UK government's growing interest in improving its support for peace processes. Read more about our work on learning from peace processes and influencing UK peacemaking policy.

Invitation to review UK Public Service Agreement on conflict
CR's Executive Director Andy Carl has been invited by the UK Prime Minister's Delivery Unit to be part of an external review team looking at its Public Service Agreement on conflict. The team will assess the government's capacity to achieve its commitments and make recommendations on any changes required.

Crossing boundaries: civil society and the security sector
CR will host a sub-regional conference on civil society and security sector reform cooperation from 30 April -1 May 2008 in Freetown with speakers from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. The conference is part of our wider ongoing Strengthening Citizens’ Security project with three local partners, which aims to make the security sector more accessible and accountable to ordinary people in the region.

In memory of Sahr Johnbull

Our colleague Sahr Johnbull, 32, sadly passed away in March 2008.  Originally from Kono district, Sierra Leone, he had worked in CR’s Freetown office for the past seven years and was Assistant Finance and Administrative Officer.  He was a valued and much-loved member of our Sierra Leonean team and will be greatly missed. We offer our deepest sympathies to his wife Isata and two children Sahr and Fatmata.
