What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving, where people volunteer, donate or fundraise for the causes they care about. Following the well-known shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it is a chance for everyone to give something back. This year it’s celebrated on Tuesday 3 December, however you can donate to help people impacted by conflict at any time.

Why give to build peace?

The number of violent conflicts has increased dramatically since 2010. Around a quarter of all people now live in countries affected by conflict and violence.

Violence affects everyone. Wars prevent communities from developing, stop children going to school and make it harder for people to access healthcare. Poverty then drives more conflict, and the cycle continues.

We can break this cycle, and help create peaceful societies.

We have been working for 25 years to stop violent conflict. In 2018, with our help, a peace agreement between the Government of Ethiopia and the armed group, the Ogaden National Liberation Front was signed. This year, the Ethiopian president was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Families have been reunited after 25 years, refugees continue to find their way back home.

At the same time we helped over 5,400 young people around the world reject violence and secure a more positive future.

While there is much to celebrate, our work continues. Every success, every achievement, reminds us of the work that urgently needs to be done.

What can you do?

Donate

This Giving Tuesday, support our work in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, where we help young people like Benjamin play an important role preventing conflict between refugees and his community. Or in the Central African Republic where we work with people like Matar Chaib to bring divided groups together.

The circumstances in both these places are challenging and a gift of any amount will bring us closer to helping people achieve the stability they so desperately need.
