In The Middle:
Non-official Mediation in Violent Situations

by Adam Curle

Bibliographical Note

The literature on mediation is very scanty, but the following short list may be helpful.

Bailey, Sydney D., 'Non-official mediation in disputes; reflections on the Quaker experience', International Affairs, 1985. A fairly short but very informative article which puts the subject into its his historical and institutional context.

Bolling, Landrum, 'Quaker work in the Middle East following the June 1967 war', in Maureen R.

Berman and Joseph E. Johnson (eds.), Unofficial Diplomats, New York, Columbia University Press, 1977.

Burton, J. W., Conflict and Communication, London, Macmillan, 1969.

Curle, Adam, Making Peace, London, Tavistock Publications, 1971. Chapter 19, 'Conciliation', gives a short account of mediation.

--, True Justice: Quaker peace makers and peacemaking, London, Quaker Home Service, 1981 (1981 Swarthmore Lecture).

Fisher, Roger, and William Ury, Getting to Yes, London, Hutchinson, 1983. A book on negotiation rather than mediation, but one containing helpful ideas for mediators -- such as that others should be treated as though they are helpful and want to try to solve problems rather than as tiresome troublemakers.

Jackson, Elmore. Middle East Mission, London and New York, Norton, 1983. A fascinating account of a shuttle between Nasser and Ben Gurion.

Rubin, Jeffrey Z. (ed.), Dynamics of Third Party Intervention: Kissinger in the Middle East, New York, Praeger, 1981.

Warren, Roland, 'The conflict system and the change agent', Journal of Conflict Resolution, vol. 8, no. 3, 1964. Probably the best account of mediation from the point of view of a social scientist.

Yarrow, C. H. Mike, Quaker Experiences in International Mediation, New Haven and London, Yale University Press, 1978. by far the most valuable and comprehensive account of mediation from any point of view.

Young, Oran R., The Intermediaries: Third Parties in International Crisis, 1967.
