Somali elders are practitioners in reconciliation, deriving their authority from being delegates of their communities and accountable to them. Hajji Abdi Hussein Yusuf discusses the qualities that Somali elders are expected to possess and the role they play in maintaining peace, from his perspective as a respected elder from Somaliland.

Somaliland kept its own traditional conflict management mechanisms in place and these values and norms were not disrupted. These have ultimately enabled us to reconcile our people and have nurtured mutual trust and dialogue.
